Since being released in 2016, the Theragun’s recovery devices have become a recognisable locker-room status symbol. Simply look inside any professional athlete or trainers bag and you’ll find a Theragun device. Even Kyrie Irving, the basketball superstar casually whipped one out in the middle of an NBA finals game. For those of you who aren’t aware of them, they’re essentially a tiny jackhammer for your muscles, one that works out all those knots and kinks, promoting blood flow. It’s like a getting a mini sports massage whenever you want one, as if you yourself are a tennis pro or premier league star who has a masseuse at you beck and call 24/7.
Speaking from experience Theragun improves not only recovery times after training but also aids in flexibility and we highly recommend percussive therapy as a whole. It works by increasing blood flow wherever you position it, aiding in reduction of inflammation. Research shows that vibration therapy can help decrease symptoms of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness or DOMS, and if you’re still unsure what that means, its that feeling that has you lunging for the ibuprofen the day after a gym session or run and has you wondering if you’ll ever want to work out again. Of course these benefits are also similar to, simpler recovery tools like foam rollers, however the Theragun is the pinnacle of at home recovery and can target hyper-localised areas on your body. Best of all it doesn’t require you to roll around on the floor in different positions. You can also do it watching that new episode of The Last Dance.
So what are the major differences to the Mini’s big brothers? Well, first of all Theragun have solved the main issue they had with previous models, its bulk. The Mini is exactly that, easy to hold, easy to use and easy to throw in a rucksack which is ideal for anyone who travels a lot. We found its a lot more comfortable to hold thanks to its ergonomic design and use day to day is much easier than it’s bigger, bulkier brother the Prime, which we tested out last year. It is also many many decibels quieter, but we wouldn’t say its “so quiet you can hardly hear it” as the brand states in marketing material. You still have multiple speed settings for when you need a good pummelling, which is indicated by three very stylish LED lights that surround the larger ON/OFF button. Simply press said button to change the speed (the LED light on the button also indicates battery life by changing from green to blue to red).
Overall Theragun have made possibly the best affordable recovery product on the market today. The only downside is the Mini having a 12mm stroke instead of its bigger brothers 16mm stroke. All this means is it may not necessarily get as deep into the muscle as the bigger versions but who cares? This is a tool meant for travel, ease and daily rehab and its a true blessing that many fitness fanatics and sports lovers across the world will welcome with open arms. We for one are already using it daily, saving the bigger Prime for full-body, deep tissue sessions. Thank you Theragun, from all of us active people out there. Thank you.
